Parasitic fauna of the invasive house sparrow (Passer domesticus) from Ñuble region, Chile: an example of co-introduced parasites

چکیده
Abstract Invasive species impact native wildlife in several ways, as they compete for resources and may transmit their specific pathogens. However, the potential consequences of co-introduced parasites are not fully understood. While house sparrow (Passer domesticus) was introduced Chile about a century ago, no data available regarding its parasites. Thus, aim present study to determine parasitic fauna this avian invader whether there co-introduced/co-invasive shared with birds. One hundred eight birds were collected from three different localities Ñuble region Chile, complete necropsy performed laboratory. Twenty-three (21.3%) parasitized by six arthropod four (3.7%) two helminth species. Four out taxa reported first time Chile; among them, tapeworm, Anonchotaenia globate, considered Only A. globata is co-invasive parasite given low degree specificity terms definitive hosts. Future research should examine additional have been brought sparrow, what might be on health Chile.

Genetic and Morphometric Divergence of an Invasive Bird: The Introduced House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) in Brazil
Introduced species are interesting systems for the study of contemporary evolution in new environments because of their spatial and temporal scales. For this study we had three aims: (i) to determine how genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of introduced populations of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) in Brazil varies with range expansion, (ii) to determine how genetic diversity a...
متن کاملDispersal of introduced house sparrows Passer domesticus: an experiment.
An important issue concerning the introduction of non-indigenous organisms into local populations is the potential of the introduced individuals to spread and interfere both demographically and genetically with the local population. Accordingly, the potential of spatial dispersal among introduced individuals compared with local individuals is a key parameter to understand the spatial and tempor...
متن کاملHow the house sparrow Passer domesticus absorbs glucose.
According to the hypothesis that most glucose absorption occurs passively across intestinal tight junctions (paracellular absorption), one would predict fairly similar rates of in vivo absorption of L-glucose, the stereoisomer of D-glucose that is absorbed only passively and is not catabolized, and of 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3OMD-glucose), the D-glucose analogue that is actively and passively tra...
متن کاملCaptivity induces hyper-inflammation in the house sparrow (Passer domesticus).
Some species thrive in captivity but others exhibit extensive psychological and physiological deficits, which can be a challenge to animal husbandry and conservation as well as wild immunology. Here, we investigated whether captivity duration impacted the regulation of a key innate immune response, inflammation, of a common wild bird species, the house sparrow (Passer domesticus). Inflammation ...
متن کاملDietary modulation of intestinal enzymes of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus): testing an adaptive hypothesis.
Insectivorous/frugivorous passerine species studied so far lack the ability to modulate intestinal maltase activity, in contrast to galliformes. We tested for dietary modulation of small intestine (SI) enzymes including maltase in house sparrows to understand whether the difference between the galliformes on the one hand, and the passerines on the other, reflects a phylogenetic pattern (maltase...
